Philadelphia Phillies 1930 PDF Print E-mail
The Phillies came to York in 1930 and played to one of the smallest Sunday crowds of the season, according to the Gazette and Daily. About 300 people watched the Phils defeat the White Roses 8 to 7. In an effort to save his pitchers, Roses manager Jack Bentley pitched seven innings. "The one-time master of the pitching mound turned in a splendid exhibition of twirling against the Phillies," the Gazette and Daily said. Bentley had taken the helm in 1929. He first played for the Senators in 1913. He also played for Baltimore and the New York Giants. The Phils hit Bently for four runs. The Phils had 14 hits, the Roses had 12.
